Academic & Research Computing Cloud (ARCC) is a virtual machine(VM) infrastructure that addresses the vast majority of Krannert's demand for secure, remote, on-demand computing.  The ARCC provides 24-hour access to Krannert-licensed software, on-demand access to workstation-performance Windows VMs for researchers, as well as custom VMs for big data or secure data research.  The ARCC is considered a "Hyper-Converged Infrastructure", a newer kind of cluster technology that allows for high-performance and fault-tolerance for an unusually low cost, so Krannert is able to provide resources for a small fraction of the cost of comparable virtual machines from a 3rd party.

Services Provided by ARCC:

RemoteApp -
RemoteApp is available to all students enrolled in a Krannert course.  Nearly all applications that are available in the RAWL 4082 computer lab are available from RemoteApp, as well as additional applications that are not.  A single RemoteApp session can last for up to 12 hours.  Accessing RemoteApp is easy... there is a native client for RemoteApp built into Windows, and there are apps for Android, iOS and Mac.  RemoteApp can also be accessed from any modern web browser from any operating system through the new HTML5 web client.  Instructions for all cases can be found in the FAQ topics below.  To access RemoteApp, go to https://virtual.krannert.purdue.edu

RemoteApp for Research -
In addition to the above comments, Faculty and PhDs will notice additional applications with the term "Research" in the name.  These applications have additional CPU resources and longer session timeouts of up to 5 days.  These applications keep running even when you're not connected to RemoteApp, but you do have to log in at least once every 2 days.  Think of RemoteApp for Research as an extra workstation you can use in the background, so you don't have to tie up your desktop for common compute needs.  This is a free service.  To access RemoteApp, go to https://virtual.krannert.purdue.edu

ResearchNow -
Researchers sometimes need different software, more RAM, CPU, or Storage size/performance than can reserved in RemoteApp.  ResearchNow is an on-demand service that provides a whole virtual desktop, pre-configured with the most common research applications.  The researcher can configure the amount of CPU and RAM resources to assign to the machine.  All will have a 100GB high-performance NVME/SSD-based Temporary drive for handling datasets directly.  The U: drive is also fast and available for data handling or storing results  Once the reservation has elapsed a ResearchNow VM is disposed off and a new one takes its place.  A ResearchNow VM can be requested in the Krannert Research Hub https://webapps.krannert.purdue.edu/sites/ResearchHub/ResearchNowRequest .  More information about ResearchNow can be found in the FAQ below. 

Custom VMs / ReseachVault -
For long term projects, bigger resources, or for projects involving sensitive/restricted data, the ARCC provides custom VMs.  These are built to satisfy the needs of a given project, so the KCC will work with you to figure out what those needs are.  These projects can go in many directions, but we can build VMs with up to 450GB RAM, 44 virtual CPUs and TB's of storage, either on all solid state storage or spinning disk (based on availability).  The KCC can also help you interpret and address the requirements of secure data agreements, finding you the best solution for your needs.

The U: and V: drives - Krannert uses a global file system called the "DFS".  All network file resources are contained inside the DFS, which is mapped to the V: drive letter on all Krannert Windows machines.  Only the files you have access to will appear.  All Fac/Staff/PhD and Masters students are given a 100GB file share under V:\USER\... this folder is directly mapped to the U: drive on all Krannert Windows machines.  While the V: and/or U: drives are automatically mapped on all Krannert Windows computers, they are also accessible from anywhere using a variety of methods.

The W: Drive - ITaP also provides all Purdue users with a 5GB network folder, which mapped to the "W:" drive on most Windows computers on campus.

The Krannert Computing Center offers shared resources to the school to assist you with your research such as printing, server storage, Lab computers, PhD Lounge computers, and a grid network of computers to process research utilizing unused computer cycles.

At Purdue

Purdue shared IT resources include the Rosen Center for Advanced Computing, TLT’s GoRemote software access, and the large DiaGrid extension of our own Condor grid.

Working Remotely

Whether you are working from remote as part of your normal routine or due to an emergency situation, you should familiarize yourself with the resources available to you from remote and how they work.  All of this presumes that you have Internet access from your location, and this access is not being filtered in a manner that would interfere with these services.

Can you work?

• Are you able to connect to the Internet when off-campus with your Krannert/Peronal equipment?
• Are you able to Remote into your on-campus desktop/laptop (if you have one) from off-campus?
  • To connect to your Krannert office machine from home, this site will generate an RDP file you can click to connect. OR
  • Full instructions for creating a Remote Desktop connection to your Krannert office machine.
• Are you able to connect to Krannert storage resources (U:, V:)? 
  • Instructions for mapping to your storage from your Krannert or Personally-owned devices.
• Are you able to connect to VPN for other University resources that may require it?

Can you work with you group/department?

• Does your group/department have/need a Team in Microsoft Teams?
• Does your group/department have a plan for alternative forms of communication?
• Be conscious of security concerns when operating remotely.  Sensitive information like FERPA certain kinds of University business should not be discussed, stored or shared through 3rd party tools without University approval.  For example, Dropbox is *not* an approved place to store sensitive information.  For storing and sharing sensitive information, the U: and V: drives are appropriate, as are University websites designed for storing/sharing such things.
