RemoteApp - How to Access RemoteApp From Windows 10 Using "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections"

*IMPORTANT* - This method is recommended for personally owned, or computer that you use exclusively.  It offers a more seamless experience without the limitations imposed by the web client.  The web client, however, is a convenient way to connect when you're away from your own computer.

Access RemoteApp from Windows 10 Using "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections"

The "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" control panel applet is built into Windows 10 (and several previous versions).  These instructions assume you are using a fully patched and updated Windows 10 computer

  1. In the Search bar next to the Windows Menu, type RemoteApp.  You should see the Open option.  Click Open.

(In previous versions of Windows, you may need to navigate to the Control Panel, change the "View by:" to "Small Icons" or "Large Icons".  Then click the "RemoteApp and Desktop Connections" entry.)

  2. Click “Access RemoteApp and desktops”

(In older versions of Windows, “Set up a new connection…”)

  3. In the “Connection URL” box, type:
https://virtual.krannert.purdue.edu  (Do not enter your email address)
and click Next, and Next again

  4. Enter krannert\username and your password. To make things convenient, also check “remember my credentials”, then click OK

  5. Once complete, all of the RemoteApps you have access to will be added to your Start Menu Programs list, grouped under a folder called "Krannert RemoteApp (RADC)".  All of the application shortcuts will be trailed with "(Krannert RemoteApp)" to help you identify and separate from applications installed on your computer.  The icons can be pinned to your Desktop, Start Menu or Task Bar like any other shortcut. Once integrated, you no longer need to enter your logon credentials until the next time you change your password.

  6. SAVING FILES:  This can be confusing the first time.

Ideally, you should use your Krannert U: Drive if you have one, or the ITaP W: Drive. In the image below, these are the locations with the format “username (\\krannert\dfs\user) U:”
To save a file to the device you are using, select one of the locationlocation in the format: “Android on localhost”.  This works, but it can be clunky and slow.
NEVER save to the “Local Disk (C: )”.   This is the server, and not your local computer.

Krannert Faculty/Staff/PhD/Masters only - You can save to “Documents”. These files will go to a subfolder of your U: drive called “RemoteApp”.
Do not delete the “RemoteApp” folder in your U: drives, it contains profile information for all of your RemoteApps.

  7. When finished, simply close the application as you would any other.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Idle RemoteApps will timeout after 30 minutes of inactivity. If you reconnect within 30 minutes from the time of disconnection, you can continue where you left off.
  • If there is a temporary network disconnection between your computer and the server, again, you can reconnect within 30 minutes to continue where you left off.
  • There is a maximum session limit of 8 hours.

 SAVE OFTEN!
